The history of the National Institute of Health begins in 1955 with the establishment of the former Medical Research Institute of Mozambique.
Institutional evolution
The institution became the Provincial Institute of Public Health in 1970, the National Institute of Public Health during the transitional government and the National Institute of Health after independence in August 1975.
From 1980 onwards, INS supported national health programmes, trained specialists and expanded research beyond malaria and parasitology.
The first Organic Statute was approved in 2004. A new statute in 2018 consolidated INS as the national authority for the generation of scientific health evidence, with administrative, technical and scientific autonomy.
